Native English Teachers

Our Native English Teachers:

In our school we have 3 Native English Teachers (NETs). They work very hard to create an English language rich environment for all of our students.

Mr. Gavin teaches P1 and P2 every week in our fabulous English room. He makes sure by the end of P2 the students have learnt all 44 phonics phonemes as well as the 120 Dolch sight words. He uses the Mr. Men and Little Miss series of books to enable students to apply their reading skills as well as to teach about morals and ethics.

Mr. Duncan and Miss Amber also join him for a part of these lessons to help with small group guided reading. Here students can read in smaller groups and get more individual attention from the NETs.

For our older students (P3-5), all 3 NETs teach and design lessons and materials for our Fun Reading Scheme.

As well as this Mr. Duncan and Miss Amber also teach P3-6 about cultures and customs from around the world in their “Light Up the World” lessons. This gives our students a global outlook to help prepare them for the rest of their lives.

Of course, classroom teaching is just one part of the NETs’ jobs. They are also actively involved in preparing students for the many English competitions ranging from radio and traditional drama to public speaking to poetry (reading aloud and writing their own) to creative story writing. They work with our great English Ambassador Teams to give extra chances to these students to develop their English language skills.

At recess time Mr. Duncan and Miss Amber play English games with our students and engage in authentic friendly conversation with them. This spontaneous chance to use English in a natural environment does wonders for the students’ confidence.

P6 is a crucial time for our students and our NETs help them to prepare for their S1 interviews by training and offering support to them.

In our school library we have Mr.Gavin’s reading corner where many books have been turned into audio books by Mr. Gavin so students can read along whilst listen to Mr. Gavin.

We have weekly English Radio Broadcasts which the NETs all contribute to and of course we have our annual English week which again the NETs play a crucial role in.

In fact you can learn all about any English news at our school in our school magazine “The English Express” which is created four times a year by our NETs (with help from the students too)!

Everyone here at Yan Laap Memorial Primary School values the importance of English and are very grateful for the effort and support our NETs give to our students every single day.
